VYH Starts Employment Program in Allentown

Valley Youth House recently began a new program, Allentown Youth Works, which is a program designed to place youth ages 17 to 24 at permanent jobs in an effort to assist youth with achieving independence.  Participants receive the following benefits:

  • Group employment training
  • transportation assistance
  • job retention support services
  • long-term planning services
  • paycheck

Youth participate in 3 weeks of group trainings that focus on the skills necessary to find and maintain employment. Youth are receive payment for attending these trainings. After the 3 weeks, youth are placed in a 3 month, 28 hour a week job experience where they are paid $10.35 an hour. After the 3 month period, the goal is for youth to either remain as an employee of that company or to use the experience they have gained to find other full time employment.

Participants must be 17-24 years old, available to work 30 hours/week, resident of Lehigh or Northampton County, not currently enrolled in school.

Throughout the entire process they will receive case management from an Employment Specialist to assist them with any barriers they may encounter. The final goal is for the youth to be employed full time at a job that pays a livable wage.
