Youth Education Program for the Prevention of Destructive Decisions The mission of this program is to prevent destructive behavior among Lehigh Valley youth, including substance abuse, violence, teenage pregnancy and truancy. The philosophy underlying this mission is that positive choices and experiences can be created and enhanced by providing young people with life skills and developmental assets. Family Intervention Program (To Top) Comprehensive and coordinated intensive clinical and case management services are provided to families in which children are identified as being at risk of maltreatment due to substance issues within the family. Any family member may be identified as possessing a drug problem. Federal funding also allows for service provision to neglected children who have a parent with either a substance abuse or mental health problem. Respite foster care, emergency shelter, medical, parenting, and homemaking services are provided on a limited basis through contracts with Pinebrook Services for Children and Youth, New Bethany Ministries, and Visiting Nurse Association of Eastern PA. Founded in 1991, Project Child is organized as a community coalition with the mission of eliminating child abuse and neglect in the Lehigh Valley. Lehigh Valley Child Care, Family and Counseling Services of the Lehigh Valley, Northampton County Office of Children, Youth and Families and Lehigh County's Children and Youth Department, The Child Advocacy Center of Lehigh County and St. Luke's Visiting Nurse Association are among the members of the coalition who work to bring child abuse prevention programming to parents and professionals in the Valley. Project Child focuses its efforts in the areas of public education, legislative advocacy, assisting parents through a Parent Line, and promoting positive parenting. Click here for more information on Project Child's services and activities. Project Child also oversees two Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance Parent Support groups in Northampton County. These are free groups open to any adult in a family. Child care is provided. Public Information Center on Drug Prevention (To Top) The Valley Youth House Public Information Center provides current and accurate drug and alcohol information to Lehigh and Northampton County educators, corporate/business human resource staff, substance abuse professionals, parents, students, and other members of the public who want to increase their awareness and knowledge about substance abuse. The Center is also a state-approved RADAR (Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource) site. Ten times a year the Information Center publishes The Digest, with drug and alcohol abuse news from around the country. In addition, Prevention & Intervention News is published April and September with news and information regarding parenting, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, and local events of interest to parents and others who are concerned with the safety and well-being of our children.
